The inside of the bag: cleaning and protecting linings
1 minute read
Linings take as much wear as the outside of a bag and get far less attention. Spills, make-up and ink are the usual culprits.
Routine care
- Empty the bag fully and turn out any loose crumbs.
- Use a lint roller or a small vacuum nozzle on a low setting for fabric linings.
- Leave the bag open for an hour to air.
Small marks
For fabric linings, dab lightly with a cloth barely dampened in water and a drop of mild soap, then blot dry. Leather linings get the same treatment as the outside. Suede linings should be brushed only.
Prevention
- Keep pens capped and make-up and liquids in a zipped pouch.
- Use a bag organiser insert in bags you carry every day.
- Never put a damp umbrella or water bottle straight into the bag.
When to stop
Large ink leaks, mould, or torn and sticky linings should go to a specialist, who can clean or replace them.
Always test any technique on a hidden area first. If a bag is valuable, delicate or already damaged, take it to a professional.
