How to get pen off a leather bag
1 minute read
Pen marks are among the most common bag accidents, and among the easiest to make worse. Speed helps; force does not.
If the mark is fresh
- Blot — don't rub — with a clean, dry cloth to lift any wet ink.
- Try a little leather cleanser on a cloth, working only on the mark.
- Wipe dry and look closely. If the mark is fading, repeat once or twice.
What not to do
Many online tips suggest alcohol, hairspray or nail-polish remover. On finished leather, these can dissolve the coloured top coat along with the ink, which leaves a pale patch that can't be cleaned away.
When to stop
If the ink has set, spread or sunk in, or if the leather is pale or unfinished, take the bag to a specialist. Ink removal is routine for them.
Always test any technique on a hidden area first. If a bag is valuable, delicate or already damaged, take it to a professional.
