How to store handbags properly
1 minute read
Bags age fastest when they are put away carelessly. A few simple habits keep the shape, colour and hardware as they should be.
The essentials
- Empty the bag completely. Pens, make-up and receipts all mark linings.
- Stuff it lightly with acid-free tissue or a pillow insert to hold its shape.
- Put it in a breathable cotton dust bag. Plastic traps moisture.
- Stand it upright on a shelf, with a little space around it.
Where to keep it
Somewhere cool, dry and dark: a wardrobe shelf rather than a loft, cellar or sunny windowsill. Heat dries leather, damp invites mould, and sunlight fades colour unevenly.
What to avoid
Hanging bags by their handles for long periods, which stretches the straps. Stacking bags on top of one another, which crushes structure and transfers colour. Wrapping straps tightly around the body, which leaves creases.
Long-term storage
Take bags out every month or two, let them breathe, and check for dryness or mould. Wrap metal hardware in tissue so it doesn't press into the leather.
Always test any technique on a hidden area first. If a bag is valuable, delicate or already damaged, take it to a professional.
