Vachetta: the leather that darkens, and how to keep it even
1 minute read
Vachetta is untreated, vegetable-tanned cowhide, used for the pale trims and handles on many designer bags. It starts the colour of cream and darkens to honey with light, air and hands. That change, the patina, is part of its character.
Why it marks
With no protective finish, vachetta absorbs whatever touches it. Water, hand cream and rain leave darker spots that are usually permanent.
Keeping it even
- Keep it dry. In rain, wipe drops off at once with a dry cloth.
- Handle it with clean, dry hands, never straight after applying hand cream.
- Let new bags see a little daylight evenly, rather than one side only.
- Store it in a dust bag so it is not exposed to dust or bright light between uses.
What not to do
Do not try to clean vachetta with water, cleanser or wipes, or to lighten a dark patch. Most attempts make the mark larger.
When to stop
Heavy staining, cracking at the handles or replacing worn trim are jobs for a specialist.
Always test any technique on a hidden area first. If a bag is valuable, delicate or already damaged, take it to a professional.
