Washing a nylon tote safely
1 minute read
Nylon bags are tougher than leather, but most have leather trims, coated linings or a water-resistant finish that a washing machine will ruin. Wash by hand.
First, check the trims
Most nylon bags have leather handles, corners or tabs. Keep these as dry as you can throughout, and clean them separately as you would smooth leather.
The method
- Empty the bag and brush out the inside.
- Mix a few drops of mild, unscented soap into lukewarm water.
- Dampen a soft cloth or sponge and wring it well.
- Wipe the nylon in sections, working around the leather trims.
- Rinse with a cloth dampened in clean water.
- Blot dry, stuff with a towel to keep its shape and air-dry away from heat.
What never to do
Put it in a washing machine or tumble dryer, soak it, or use bleach. These lift coatings, warp structure and stain the leather parts.
Always test any technique on a hidden area first. If a bag is valuable, delicate or already damaged, take it to a professional.
